He was a Guyana-born novelist, playwright, poet, activist and educator. Carew was considered a Guyanese literary icon. He studied at universities in the USA and in Europe - France and Czechoslovakia. Carew was a man of many faces. He was a Professor at the University of Louisville and an Emeritus Professor at Northwestern University, Chicago and was also a writer, educator, philosopher and advisor to several nation states. He died at his home in Louisville, Kentucky on December 6, 2012.
