Major General Alan Bishop Stretton was a senior Australian Army officer, who had served in the Pacific, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam. He came to public prominence through his work in the cleanup efforts at Darwin in the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Day 1974. He flew to Darwin, where Cyclone Tracy had destroyed more than 70 per cent of the city buildings and killed 71 people. Under his leadership, 36,000 people were evacuated and essential services were restored." He was named the 1975 Australian of the Year.
