Mr Van Doren,his older brother Paul cooked up their iconic brand of shoes in their family rubber factory in the 1960s. Almost immediately, they turned out to be the perfect fit for the skateboarding culture that swept southern California.
They would name it Vans and create an instantly recognisable logo with a capital V whose elongated tail covered the rest of the word.
