He was a United States federal judge. He graduated of Marquette University Law School, where he earned a law degree. Coffey was a passionate champion of Marquette University. The cause of his death was heart failure. Coffey served as a judge nearly 60 years. Throughout his professional career he worked in several positions: assistant city attorney for the City of Milwaukee (1949 -1954), a judge for Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, first as a Civil Court judge (1954 - 1960), then a Municipal Court judge (1960 - 1962), and then as a Circuit Court judge, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin (1962 - 1978). He was the senior judge of the Criminal Division (1972 - 1975), chief presiding judge of the Criminal Division (1976), a Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court from (1978 - 1982).
