He was a professional Colombian football goalkeeper and coach. Throughout his active sport career he played for several teams like Deportivo Cali, Atlético Nacional and more than a decade played at Mexican side Pachuca. In the years 2011-2012 he also managed Pachuca football team. Rodríguez and his wife had two children Miguel Ángel and Juan José. He died at Mexico City hospital after complications following a stroke.
