was a Honduran environmental activist and indigenous leader of the Lenca people, and co-founder and co-ordinator of the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH). She won the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2015.She was killed in her home, after years of threats against her life. Cáceres was killed in her home in La Esperanza (Intibucá) by armed intruders on the morning of March 3, 2016. Her brother was also injured in the incident.
