She was a British immunologist. Askonas was known to her friends as "Ita". She graduated from the McGill University and the University of Cambridge. During her professional career Askonas made major contributions to the understanding of the immune system. Passed away on January 9, 2013 after a brief illness with cancer, a few months short of her 90th birthday.
