Elizabeth Peña was an American actress and director. Peña was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She grew up in Cuba and moved to New York City at the age of eight. She was the daughter of Estella Margarita (née Toirac), an arts administrator and producer, and Mario Peña, an actor, writer, and director who co-founded the Latin American Theatre Ensemble. Her parents were Cuban. Peña graduated from New York's High School of Performing Arts in 1977. Her classmates included Ving Rhames and Esai Morales, both of whom she would later star alongside. She was a founding member of the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors.
