Professor Gerwel was a South African academic and anti-apartheid activist. During his career he served in academia field as a lecturer, as chancellor of Rhodes University and as a rector of the University of the Western Cape. Gerwel was also director general in the office of president Nelson Mandela. He died on November 28, 2012 at the Netcare Hospital in Kuils River.
