Robert Fenzan (1956-1981) *24

I remember Bob as a fellow student at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and as a fellow cadet in the Air Force Reserve Officers Training program (AFROTC). We graduated together; but sadly, as by this time (1978) Bob was sick, he was denied his hard-won Air Force commission.

As most of us then departed Ohio State for our Air Force assignments, Bob was left behind. It was only later, through the grapevine and the wonderful Detachment 645 secretary Annie Reichert (as this was pre-Internet), we all learned of Bob's passing in 1981. Most of us didn't even know he had been sick; few of us knew of the specifics of his disease.

It is only now, 40 years later, going through old photo albums that he came to mind. There he is in a group photo at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, on a day trip with other Arnold Air Society candidates.

I will admit, I don't remember much about Bob. My memory is not what it used to be. But I can say by seeing that picture, and remembering his name, only good memories come back. And I am saddened that we all left for exciting new lives, while Bob was left behind. Most of us never knew; we were all self-centered new college graduates.
