He was a popular Irish racing historian and respected racing journalist. Throughout his professional career Sweeney worked for the Daily Mirror in period 1955 to 1997 and also for the Evening Press and the Irish Times. He was inducted into Racing's Hall of Fame in 2002 and in 2007 for his works. He married Annie and they had together one son Nick. Sweeney died at St. James's Hospital in Dublin on December 4, 2012.
