Joseph Arcaris was my great-great-uncle, and though I never got to meet him I knew him to be a very talented and heroic man, though he was also very humble. He was a professional animal trainer, working mostly with lions and tigers, but he was also known to train leopards, bears, monkeys, and apes on occasion. He worked at Benson's Animal Farm in New Hampshire for over forty years, and was known as one of the best animal trainers in the country. He received a Carnegie Medal for bravery in 1940 when he saved a workman from five untrained lions by beating the lions off the man with a discarded two-by-two. He was also awarded a Bronze Star in the army during World War II by gunning down several enemy soldiers to defend his injured comrade, before taking him to safety. He was an honorable, well-loved, and dedicated man. Joseph Arcaris dies in 2002 in his home at age 93 from a heart attack. He is buried in Massachusetts National Cemetery.
