My father, Richard Paul Mills, known as Paul R. Mills during his military service, was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U. S. Navy and post-WWII in the U. S. Air Force. He was a decorated U. S. Marine during the Korean War, and served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War until his retirement on February 01,1973. He had his faults, as did most veterans returning from armed conflict. He had seen more destruction and death than most people who live under the blanket of freedom that his generation provided, and it had an effect on him that he kept mainly to himself throughout his life. There are things he done during his lifetime that others would cringe at and consider a blot on his character. Regardless of what others may think about him, he was my father and I loved him. God did not breath life into my lungs so that I could sit in judgement of any man - much less my father. As a Christian - one who believes in blind faith, the trinity, and all that the trinity encompasses - I have to believe that God had a purpose for the way my father was, and for the man I have become, and I forgive him for his sins - as I hope that I may one day be forgiven for mine. Not all of my brothers would agree. However, my father taught his children the importance of family and loyalty and, because of his guidance, we remain close to each other even today. He will never be considered for sainthood, and may even be burning in Hell for all I know. But he is loved and missed by me - if no one else. I loved my father. Paul R. Mills, AKA Richard Paul Mills, passed away on April 17, 1996, and was laid to rest at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida with full military honors. Ironically, he passed away again on the same day in 2010, when my loyal and loving Alaskan Husky, Cherokee, died in my arms. I always felt that Cherokee's spirit and love was that of my father, attempting to make amends from beyond the grave. Life is a mysterious journey at best, and we are all just chess pieces in a game began thousands of years ago.
