The meaning of the name is uncertain, and is thought to be a "nursery" version of Barbara, from the Greek "barbados", foreign or stranger. Early church register examples of the surname recordings include on February 7th 1633, Jane Bebb and Thomas Hall, who were married at St. Dunstan's church, Stepney, and Abigale Bibb, the daughter of Thomas Bibb, christened at St Brides church, Fleet Street, London, on August 14th 1689.
