To add to the confusion there are three quite separate meanings and origins, which may or may not, mean the samething in each different country! In general the surnames Ram, Ramm and Ramme were originally nicknames for a lusty man, although it may also refer to a shepherd, or possibly somebody who lived at an inn with the sign of the Ram. Slightly later church recordings include Juan Ramos of Nuestra Senora la Antigua, Valladolid, Spain, on October 9th 1535, and Joan Pau Ramo, at Santa Maria, Mataro, Barcelona, on January 6th 1552. Mariano Ramos was christened at Carmel Mission, Monterey, California, on June 6th 1839, and Adolph H Ramm at San Francisco on September 2nd 1877. The coat of arms has the blazon of a gold field charged with a black ram trippant, pierced with a silver arrow, on a green mount. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Hendricus Ram, which was dated 1188, in the register of the abbey of Bury St Edmunds, England, during the reign of King Henry 11, known as 'The church builder', 1154 - 1189. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
