He was a Taiwanese botanist and inventor in agriculture science. Chen Wen-Yu graduated from the Yungkang Public School in Tainan and he was also admitted to the Hsinfeng College of Agriculture. After study he began worked in field of research for the Fengshan Tropical Horticultural Experimental Station. During his professional career he acquired the nickame "Watermelon King".
