David E Starry (1912-1994) *81

David's ashes were spread near Ely, Vermont where his Uncle and namesake, David R. Starry once ran a boys camp known as Camp Pasumpsic. He and his cousin, Jack Richard Starry both attended the camp and eventually became counselors there. David was an explorer and many of his heroes were people who threw caution to the wind and were wild and free in their life. Being the son of the principal of the local high school, no doubt, cramped his style a bit, and as soon as he could he left small-town life.

He was a world traveler, a journalist in the West Indies, a cruise director for Cunard, a Buddhist, and once retired he returned to his hometown of York Springs. There he led a quiet life but continued his writing as a journalist with the Patriot News out of Harrisburg, PA. He was a collector as well. Autographs, stamps, Buddhist and other religious statues to name just a few. He died in the family home on Main Street, a Civil War-era home that was somehow magical with its wide, and sometimes uneven plank floors, its outside kitchen covered by an arbor of sweet-smelling lilacs, and a small white nook nestled among the trees behind the house that any writer would have loved for its view of flower-laden gardens and peaceful vibe.

David's father was William Roy Starry, known as Jack by his family and friends. He was a professor of history and instilled his love of family and local history into more than one of his flock. He was found dead on May 16, 1994 by his cousin Jack Starry. A sudden end to an interesting soul who made the most of his life.
