He was a Scottish footballer who played his entire career as centre half for Dundee United. Smith signed for Dundee United at the age of 21 and spent all of his playing days at Tannadice, appearing in 628 competitive matches. He made his last appearance in 1976.
Smith had an association with the Club that lasted over 40 years, first as a player and then director, vice chairman and then chairman in 2002. He also became an official with the SFA and Scottish League, working on various committees, eventually becoming Scottish League President.
