Biography
Gilder E Tanner I am certainly not the final authority on the life of Gilder E. Tanner, but there is no biography here now, and I think there should be. Gilder E. Tannner was a wonderful person. He had a great sense of humor and he cared about the children and teachers in Crosby Elementary School where he served as principal. Although some people were intimidated by his size, others knew him to be almost like a Teddy Bear. Little children used to hug around his legs when he would try to walk down the halls. He was married to an elementary teacher whom he always addressed in public as "Mrs. Tanner." Before I knew Mr. Tanner, he had served as a principal when Crosby I.S.D. was segregated with separate schools for Caucasian and African-American students. Desegregation was difficult in Crosby, and because various people ahead of Mr. Tanner in the school hierarchy chose to leave the district, Mr. Tanner found himself as high school principal. He used to tell of the stress and weight loss he suffered while in that position as rumors spread quickly through the community and crowds of people gathered out front. He led a search party around the outside of the school and found an assortment of weapons that had been left by unknown parties in case of trouble. Mr. Tanner saw ladies across the street wearing aprons with the aprons wrapped around their hands, and this caused him grave concern. Luckily, it seems that there were no huge disturbances during the school day, but Mr. Tanner resigned as principal, because he did not want to be on a battle line at some future date. Later, he came back when things had settled down some and was elementary principal. Other principals respected the experience that Mr. Tanner brought to the job and his dedication to maintaining a safe educational environment for all students. I looked on Mr. Tanner as a great man doing a very solid job for the students in our district. He was always there to provide perspective and consider the bright side of any challenge that arose. Mr. and Mrs. Tanner adopted a daughter, and they were very proud of her. We used to hear him tell us about her interest in the study of criminology and her plans to pursue a career in that field.
