Harry C Beldengreen (1912-1992) *79

Harry C Beldengreen Harry Beldengreen was my father. I'm 75 now and looking back I can honestly say he was not a perfect man, but he was still the finest man I ever knew.. He never lectured me but instead taught me how to live, by example. Whenever I chose my own path, he could sometimes caution me, but always in the end, supported my decisions. He was usually right. He left Poland as a teenager to join his father brother and sister in New York and soon found work to help bring the rest of the family to America. They didn't know enough to realize how poor they were. Compared to their lives in Poland they were rich. He met and married my mother, another European immigrant, took a small apartment in a brownstone in Brooklyn. He had a good job as a dental technician, when my brother David was born. 2 years later the Japanese bombed Pearl harbor. The following day my father resigned his job, and joined the Navy. He joined up to fight the Germans and Japanese. When the Navy realized he was a dental technician they sent him to Samson Naval Base in Utica New York to help prepare servicemen for deployment to fight in those theaters. Oddly enough, at the Naval Base my father's talent in dental technology became recognized and fostered. He became a Master of Dental Technology and taught every technician and dentist who rotated through that huge facility. By the end of the war he had helped to educate an entire generation of dental techs. Wherever I traveled during my 50 year career in dentistry, Dental conferences and trade meetings here and abroad, I was inevitably stopped by some old timer and told stories about how wonderful my dad had been to them. He certainly left the world a better place than he found it. That was Harry C. Beldengreen.
