Lisa Medrano Kilby Language: English Report abuse

Dear Eugene,

I knew you Father, Modesto . . . many years ago. In 1970, while working new accounts at Liberty National Bank I had the pleasure of meeting Modesto through Richard Shemano, the V.P. of the Bank. Modesto, would come and sit at my desk every day, and I would fill out his deposit slips and we would chat about love, life, and happiness. When I turned 21, Modesto Lanzone opened in Ghirardelli Square, and your Dad asked for permission from Richard Shemano for me to stand in front and meet and seat the customers. Later, I worked as the hostess (as a favor to your Father) after working at the Bank all day. Eventually, I knew your whole family, including you, your Mom and of course your Dad and many of his dreams (art and the idea of a restaurant with wonderful art).

I remember how he swam in the bay everyday and every Monday night he would make me go along with him and his friends to different restaurants. Modesto tried his hardest to give me an opportunity in the restaurant business, From his wine cellar downstairs (turning the corks) to the crazy kitchen with everyone fighting all the time. One of his friends was an auctioneer (he called him Barney, I think) and when Playland at the Beach was auctioned, I was there with the group of friends to see my first auction.

1972, I became a stewardess and my own dream of travelling the world came true . . . but every time I was in town, I would bring my group to Modesto's for the best food in San Francisco, and always get the best seat in the house. I remember coming in once and seeing you and Eugene, I think you were also swimming in the bay (?) and were a young teenager. I asked about your Mom and Modesto told she had passed away and I looked over at you and my heart broke.

Just a note to let you know, your Dad often crosses my mind, I can just see him tossing me his Alfa Romeo keys to pick up a friend from the airport and shaking all the way worried I'd ruin that little black car. My husband (Frank) and I visited and have had dinner at every restaurant he ever touched, and your Father was the magic ingredient in every single one. He was always a good friend and a good man. I am so proud to say he was my friend and life mentor.

My very best to you Eugene.

Lisa
