Biography
Morris Biblowitz Morris married Sadie Biblowitz. Morris began his career delivering newspapers and then became a bus driver with the City of New York. When the New YYork City Bus Drivers Unionized the living standards of the Biblo family went up dramatically. They moved from a 2-room apartment to an apartment with enough bedrooms for the family. They Americanized their name to Biblo. The had Dorris, Frieda, Dina, Jack, Albert and Lillian. Lillian recalled that Sadie’s mother “Buby” was full of love and joy, and good at cooking. She also remembered that Sadie’s father was a very formal and traditional Orthodox or Hasidic Jew who lived with them in their apartment and studied the Torah. Sadie spoke Yiddish with the women at the market. Jack Biblo owned the Biblo & Tannen bookstore and served in a military hospital as a medical technician in Europe during WWII. Albert lived to be 105. Frieda got married to her husband after receiving an enormous diamond engagement ring. Lillian recalled “Frieda wanted money, she always wanted money, and/so she got it.” Dorris and Dinah took Lillian to Coney Island many times when she was child. They paid nickels for song sheets which they would sing on the Island. Coney Island was known for its beach and Vaudville. Albert built an FM crystalline radio when he was a teenager in the 1920s. Radio stations were more local in that time period with some broadcast towers only covering a block. The telephone was invented in 1876. Radio communication was wireless and unregulated. Licensed commercial broadcasting of radio began in 1920 in the United States. Lillian married Leonard “Leo” Goodman and had 1 daughter at 40, which was considered unusual at the time. Leonard founded a company that sold business machines such as mechanical cash registers, step-ladders and carts, and staplers. He sold his business at 50 for $250,000, with the suggestion that he retire, but became bored in retirement and started another company. Sadly he died from a heart attack in his 50s and Lillian and Jane were only able to collect 1/10 of the amount Leo lost upon the failure of his business after his death. Lillian earned her Bachelors degree in Education at Brooklyn College-CUNY and her Masters in Education at Smith College. Lillian wanted to continue her education but couldn’t find anywhere to study where they had settled in Longmeadow, MA. Leo waited for her at the train station and drove her home every day while she completed her degree. After Leonard’s death, Lillian taught Reading and English with an emphasis on Shakespeare for 20 years until her retirement at 70. She studied Jewish History and Culture with the Rabbi Barry Weinstein at Louisiana State University becoming LSU’s Oldest Student in the 1990s. An article was published about this in the Baton Rouge Advocate. Lillian had a brother who was a police officer eventually reaching the rank of Captain. Leonard Goodman was a 33 ° Free Mason. -Kyle Guzik (1985-), 8/9/2022.
