Aboriginal elder Robert Bropho was serving a six year sentence for abusing an 11 year-old girl in the 1990s. The abuse occurred while Bropho was the leader of the Swan Valley Nyoongah Camp. The camp was shut down by the State Government in 2003 amid concerns about sexual abuse at the community.
Bropho was jailed for three years in 2008 but the Court of Appeal extended the term to six years after describing the original sentence as manifestly inadequate. His lawyers filed a separate appeal in a bid to overturn his conviction but it was dismissed.
