Vester Lee Flanagan II was identified as the perpetrator. He was a journalist originally from East Oakland, Oakland, California. Flanagan attended San Francisco State Univerrsity, where he earned a degree in radio and television in 1995. He interned at KPIX in San Francisco in 1993, eventually working there as a production assistant and weekend news writer. Before beginning his news career, he was a small-time actor and model. From February 1997 to March 1999, Flanagan worked as a general assignment news reporter at CBS affiliate WTOC-TV in Savannah, Georgia
