This interesting surname of English origin is a dialectal variant of the locational name Helford in Cornwall, deriving from the Welsh "heli" meaning "brine" or "haler" "salt", hence "salt river" plus the Old English pre 7th Century "ford" "ford", thus "ford over the river Hayle".
