Derived from the Olde English pre 7th century 'Falod'. This surname is a medieval job descriptive term for an agricultural worker - one who drove the cattle to the folds or fenced enclosures or who lived by the folds. The latter topographical form can be found in John atte Fold in the Pipe Rolls of Somerset for 1327. The name development includes Folder (Robert Folder being christened at St. Dunstans, Stepney in 1614), whilst Mary Faulder is recorded as marrying Hilton Docker at St. Johns, Eltham in 1814. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Ivo Faulder. which was dated 1332, in the Pipe Rolls of Cumberland. during the reign of King Edward 111 known as 'The Father of the Navy' 1327-1377. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
