History does funny things to names and particularly so in the case of local dialectual corruptions. Here we have a derivation from the Midlands village of Inkersall, near Derby, the modern name spelling being found as Ingersoll, Inkersole and the very shortened Insko, however, as can be seen from the original recording, the name has long confused the scribes. The original name is Olde English pre 6th century A.D., the translation being, the house on the island (inis) for the catching of fish (cype). The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Roger de Hynkersul which was dated 1321 The Pipe Rolls of Sheffield during the reign of King Edward 11 Edward of Caernafon 1307-1327 Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
