Recorded as Serridge and Surridge, this is an English surname. It has three possible origins. The first of which is from a Medieval English personal name, "Seric", itself a combined or fused form of two Old English pre 7th century personal names "Saeric", meaning Sea-power and "Sergric", meaning Victory-power. The second possible source is locational from the Old French regional surname "Surrais", meaning a southerner, one who had migrated from the South of France. This was a word and name introduced by the Normans after their successful invasion of England in 1066, and this in time became confused with both the English names Seric and Saeric. The third possible origin is locational from a place called Surridge in the parish of Morebath, in the county of Devonshire. This means the south ridge, from the Old English words "suth", meaning south and "hrycg", a ridge. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert Surrais. This was dated 1143, in the calendar of documents relating to the Danelaw for Lincolnshire, during the reign of King Stephen of England, 1135 - 1154. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
