He was a Czech poet, novelist, translator, diplomat and politician. Grusa was banned as an author under the communist regime. After he signed the Charter 77 human rights manifest inspired by Vaclav Havel, he was expelled from Czechoslovakia in early 1980s and lived in exile in Germany.
After the 1989 Velvet Revolution that toppled communism, Grusa returned home and served as ambassador to Germany and Austria and also as education minister in 1997-98. From 2003 to 2009, he led the PEN club.
